Questions concerning the Pre-election Campaign in North Korea

This document discusses the Korean elections to the People's Committee, posing and answering a specific set of questions. The first questions concerns the idea that estate owners would attempt to divert peasants from participating in the elections since they were unhappy with the land reforms. Other questions talks about an Yezd, where the students and teachers printed a list of people who had expressed dissatisfaction towards the People's Committee.

Memo of the Directorate for Foreign Relations of the USSR Armed Forces General Staff about the Results of a Conference of Leaders of the Political Parties and Organizations of North and South Korea

The statement describes the conference which took place in Pyongyang from June 29 to July 5. The main goal of the conference was to discuss the separate elections held in South Korea and possibilities for the unification of Korea. The North Korean representatives considered the National Assembly formed in South Korea to be illegitimate and urged for the expulsion of foreign powers in order to achieve a unified Korea.

UN Resolution 112 (II), "The Problem of the Independence of Korea," calls for elections to be held and for foreign troops to withdraw in order to achieve the unification of the Korean Peninsula.

The ROK-US airlift military exercise "Freedom Vault" raises tensions with North Korean. The timing of the exercise may also bolster the current administration's prospect for reelection. Additionally, ROK troops are replacing US troops in the DMZ.

In connection with the presidential and National Assembly elections, violent clashes between police forces and the opposition NDP have taken place. Accusations from both NDP and DRP are being slung, and the current ruling party DRP is using the fear of potential North Korean subversion to repress the opposition party.

Kuzbari writes about the upcoming elections in South Korea and reports that a new political party called Nationalist Party has formed in opposition to the NDP. Regarding trade, the ROK government is opening trade relations with non-hostile communist countries. And regarding relations with North Korea, an ROK fishing boat was attacked by North Koreans due to possible spy activity.

Kuzbari briefs Narasimhan on election and national security updates in South Korea, including the campaigns of Kim Dae Jung and Park Chung Hee; the debate over ROK forces in Vietnam; DPRK and ROK naval clashes over what DPRK speculates to be a spy boat but ROK states is a fishing boat; and discussion concerning the return of the North Korean pilot who crash landed in South Korea.

Principal Secretary of the UNCURK Zouheir Kuzbari informs Chef de Cabinet of the UNs C.V. Narasimhan of Chung Hee's policies for rapid, self-sustained economic development and strengthening defense posture, turn over of U.S. force equipment to ROK forces, killing of two North Korean infiltrators, and the nomination of Kim Dae Young for presidency.
